Tobacco Taxes in Mexico: A Means to Raise Revenue and Reduce Poverty
This Policy Brief was written by the Centro de Investigación en Alimentación y Desarrollo (CIAD) in Mexico. The Policy Brief examines the effects of two increases in the specific component tax on cigarettes and the effects they would have on revenue and cigarette consumption in Mexico. The Policy Brief shows that increasing taxes beyond the rate of inflation is more effective in reducing tobacco use and generating additional government revenue.
