Cigarette Tax Scorecard (2nd Edition): Jordan

This Policy Brief was written based on the findings of the second edition of the Cigarette Tax Scorecard. The brief evaluates the cigarette tax policies in Jordan. In 2020, Jordan scored 3.38 points out of 5 overall. Although this is higher than the region and income group averages, there is still room for improvement. The overall score is an average of the following components: the cigarette price, changes in affordability, the tax share of the price, and the tax structure. Jordan received all 5 points in the affordability change component. On the other hand, Jordan received only 1 point for its tax structure. This policy brief makes recommendations for Jordan's government to implement a more effective tax system that will improve public health while raising tax revenues.
