Belize overall score is lower than the average score of its region, income group, and the global average. There is ample room for improvement in its cigarette tax system.
Component Score
2022
Belize scores poorly in cigarette price, affordability change and tax share, and in the mid-range in tax structure. It would greatly benefit from higher cigarette prices, reducing the cigarette affordability, increasing the tax share of price, and improving the tax structure.
Scores Over Time
Belize's overall score increased between 2014 and 2020. But it declined slightly in 2022 because of a drop in the tax structure score. The rest of the component scores remained unchanged.
