Australia scores better than the average scores of countries in its region and income group, and higher than the global average, yet there is ample room for improvement relative to top performing countries.

Australia scores well in cigarette price, tax structure and tax share, but scores poorly in affordability change. It would greatly benefit from reducing the cigarette affordability.
Scores Over Time
Australia's overall score has been decreasing since 2018. The decline in 2022 was largely due to a significant reduction in the affordability change score. Although there was a slight increase in the tax share of price in 2022, the cigarette price and tax structure scores remained the same as 2020.
